5.5 Kilowatt Sailboat Electric Drive
ELECTRIC PROPULSION for boats has been around for over 100 years. Electric Boats were developed after steam and before internal combustion engines. In the late 1890′s there were more electric boats than diesel of gasoline boats. Shorepower Charging Stations existed up and down the Thames River. Built in 1898, the Mary Gordon was 52 feet long, carried 75 passengers, cruised at 8 knots and had a range of 48 miles! Diesel and gasoline quickly replaced electric boats due to longer ranges from higher density fuel. Shortly after the introduction of the internal combustion engine came the hybrid which has been in service ever since in Submarines.
NEW TECHNOLOGY has enabled electric boats to start competing against internal combustion engines. The majority of small sailboats can now be easily re-powered with electric without inconveniencing their owners. All daysailors fall into this class. Hunter has recently offered an all electric 27 foot sloop. Optional gasoline and diesel engines can provide get home power if so needed.
TODAY’S ELECTRIC DRIVES off sailors unprecedented range, ease of operation, power and durability. Our drives are built to ABYC standards for Electric Propulsion, are efficient and maintenance free. Our Electric Drives are the result of 5 years of research and development, the final results of which can be viewed at the Electric Boat Design Website.
PROPULSION MARINE (PM) Electric Drives offer the following benefits:
1) Propulsion Marine E-Drives are rated at continuous use in the marine environement.
2) PM motors are very efficient, double stator, permanent magnet, brushless 3 phase AC synchronous motors.
3) Sevcon controllers are ultra-efficient with high power output in a compact design.
4) All our components are heat-sinked for lower operating temperatures and higher efficiency.
5) Temperature controlled fans introduce cooler air into the engine compartment.
6) Browning Gearboxes are an elegant solution to providing both gearing and a thrust bearing in a compact, lightweight, and functional design.
7) Ten different Gear Ratios between 1.25: 1 and 5:1 allow us to perfectly match a propeller to a motor and change the personality of the drive between very powerful and very efficient, depending on how the boat is being used.
8) Our E-Drives are all custom made for your application. Our Drop Pan Mounts are made to fit your boat. Our wiring harnesses are the lengths that you specify making your installation clean and professional.
9) Our Flexible Coupling protects the thrust bearing from misalignment, plus provides an alignment indicator.
10) Propulsion Marine Throttles are rated for outdoor use and feature friction hold with a center neutral detente.
11) Safety is our Priority. Cable end boots and split looms are included. Safety tips are included in our comprehensive installation manual.
12) Each of our Electric Drives includes a 48 volt DC distribution box with 250 amp breaker capable of switching under load, and 2 din mount breakers and expansion for up to 3 more din mount breakers up to 63 amps and 3 more surface mount breakers up to 100 amps. This provides for a clean installation capable of growing with your system over time to include solar, wind, DC to DC converters, windlass, watermaker and any other component you would prefer to run at the ultra-efficient 48 volts. This breaker box is made of anodized aluminum.
13) Our hard working staff provides tech support at most hours of the day.
14) All of our Electric Drives are covered by a 2 year guarantee when used under normal operating conditions.
100 years old and better than ever. Fill out our Electric Drive Worksheet to get a Quotation from our ABYC Qualified Electricians. We will get you on the water enjoying your new Electric Boat.

Hybrid
Hybrid Propulsion
There are two types of Diesel Electric Hybrid Systems, the Serial Hybrid and the Parallel Hybrid.
The Serial Hybrid
The Serial Hybrid consists of an electric motor driving the propeller from batteries that are recharged by a DC generator. The advantages of this system are: the components are optimized, the electric motor is perfectly suited to the propeller with the correct gear ratio, the generator is perfectly suited to charging the battery bank, and the simplicity of the system allows for easy maintenance. The automotive equivalent of this system is the Chevy Volt.
Our preference is the Serial Hybrid for sailboats, because both electric motors and diesel generators are very reliable and the Serial Hybrid Design is more in line with how a sailboat is used. Additionall, the small size of the propulsion motor allows for flexibility in the design of the interior layout of the boat, and the diesel generator can be installed outside of the living spaces of the boat in an aft lazarette. The diesel generator in a serial hybrid design can be either smaller than the electric motor – for boats that use solar as their primary source of power and require the diesel as a backup, or larger than the electric motor – for boats that have heavy house loads and big batteries and wish to minimize diesel engine run time.
In the coming months we will be introducing the first affordably priced serial hybrid to complement our existing line of Polar Power based Serial Hybrid Combinations. Stay tuned or email us for more information on this exciting new development.
The Parallel Hybrid
The Parallel Hybrid consists of a diesel motor and an electric motor, each capable of driving the propeller individually or at the same time. The advantages of this system is the redundancy of having two different motors capable of driving the same propeller. The automotive equivalent of this system is the Toyota Prius. Both Beta Marine and Steyr Motors make Parallel Hybrid Marine Engines. Typically the diesel engine is more powerful than the electric motor.
The Parallel Hybrid is perfect for powerboats who want a high powered diesel motor yet wish to have the flexibility of electric motor sailing and / or electric harbor maneuvering. The Parallel Hybrid is better for motor yachts that require high power from the diesel engine for normal running conditions.
