OPEN FRAME DRIVES
5 KW Mars/Emerson Electric Drive
All of the open frame motors share the same electric motor. Different output is obtained through different controllers operating on different voltages. The ultralight has a smaller gearbox.
ADVANTAGES:
- Brushless AC for higher efficiency and less EMI (electromagnetic interference)
- Permanent Magnet for higher efficiency (does not require current to excite a field winding)
- Fan Cooled for excellent heat dissipation.

- Low cost
- Mounted to a Browning Gearbox which optimizes the electric motor to the propellor, increases the height of the motor out of the bilge, and provides a thrust bearing.
DISADVANTAGES:
-Possibility of water or salt air ingress.
In the event of salt water ingress, motor can be flushed with fresh water, then thoroughly dried (after disconnecting all electrical wires). Damage to bearings can result from prolonged submersion of motor in salt water.
